Mathematics
IN THIS LESSON
Learners will compare estimations of the height of trees to their measurements of a tree.
Explicit
This will help children understand how to use a measuring stick and to compare their estimations of the age of a tree to the calculated age. It helps children understand how to convert one unit of measurement to another and to read standard units of measurement.
Connect the Learning
Measuring the height of individual trees allows us to record the health of a forest, monitor tree population, how fast a forest is going and the impact that climate change has on a forest. A healthy ecosystem should have a verity of trees at a variety of heights; this indicates a healthy level of sunlight. Reduced heights is a signal of environmental distress.
