IN THIS LESSON

Learners will create adventure sticks to help them retell a story.

Explicit

In this lesson, learners will use nature in a tactile way to record a journey. This will provide something concrete to support a recount activity as a follow up. Learners will choose items of a personal interest to describe their journey, attaching it to a stick. Learners will then use recount vocabulary to discuss the journey that they have taken and write as a possible extension.

Connect the Learning

Journey sticks can be traced back to native Australians and Americans. In aboriginal culture in Australia, journey sticks were used as a w ay of recounting a journey or trip that a clan had made. Items were secured in chronological order to ensure the correct information was retold. In native American culture, journey sticks were created as a navigational tool and consisted of natural markers to describe and negotiate a road travelled.
